When it comes to celebrating the female form through photography there’s something about baby bump shoots that really capture the imagination. Since Demi Moore’s famous 1991 Vanity Fair cover a steady stream of celebrities have unveiled their pre-birth curves to share the magic of pregnancy but you don’t need to be an A-lister to stage a maternity shoot. Today on the blog we are sharing the why, what and how of bump photography and hoping to inspire you to create some customised canvas prints you’ll treasure for years to come.

Why hold a maternity shoot?
Our bodies come in all shapes and sizes but the strength of the female body is superbly evident during pregnancy. While the mum-to-be might be battling morning sickness and experiencing highs and lows thanks to their bodies being flooded with hormones there’s no doubt there is beauty to behold in their changing body. If you’re pregnant and don’t quite feel like you’re experiencing the well-documented pregnancy glow, a maternity shoot may just help you bring back some sparkle.

The classic celebrity maternity shoot is a nude one, albeit with some strategically placed arms that show a bump off to its full. The resulting images usually feature soft lighting and lines and are often printed in black and white. If you’re a firm believer that there’s no need to mess with something tried and tested, you will need very little in the way of props or set up. With good lighting against a plain backdrop a photographer will have everything they need. If this all sounds a little chilly, you could consider adding in some lingerie, lounge wear or linen. If you head down this path you’ll have some additional texture to focus on within the photo.

One trend that has been making waves on the internet is the maternity milk bath, which have a beautiful ethereal feel. These bathroom shoots involve filling a bath with just the right amount of milk to introduce some opacity with mums to be surrounded with floating flowers and fauna and potentially draped with fabrics such as lace or silk too. The results can be very artistic, look fantastic transferred to canvas and as an added bonus the milk is meant to be good for the skin too!

It’s not just human pregnancies that throw up photo opportunities though. Devoted animal owners have recently been turning their photographic attentions to pregnant cats and dogs, capturing their magical maternity moments too. Take a peek at this cat maternity shoot and doggy and pup show for inspiration for your very own expecting furry friends.
